Anaesthetic advice?

It is important for your Anaesthetist to be aware of your condition. We can provide them information about this.

  • Local anaesthetics can be used safely with no additional risk because of your condition.

Having a general anaesthetic

  • With general anaesthetics we recommend avoiding some particular anaesthetics known as ‘volatile anaesthetics’ and other drugs such as suxamethonium.

General anaesthetics can sometimes worsen your symptoms.

  • Often, the cold environment in the operating theatre and hospital, fasting as well as having to be still for a long time are bigger contributors to worsening symptoms than the general anaesthetic itself.

  • We recommend making your anaesthetist and treating team aware of this so that they can take measures to help.
  • We recommend the following general measures
    • Keeping warm after the procedure
    • Being first on the list, to avoid prolonged fasting
    • Monitoring electrolyte levels during and after surgery
    • Maintaining activity as safely as appropriate post surgery

If you are going to have a general anaesthetic, please contact the team so that we can send out further specific advice tailored to your condition.
