What happens in Pregnancy?

During Pregnancy

  • It is important that you have an Obstetrician throughout the course of your pregnancy

  • Your obstetrician may require information about your condition and we can provide this

  • Symptoms during pregnancy can vary between people. Some people find that symptoms worsen and for others, symptoms improve. This varies and is influenced by hormonal changes and also the increased weight during pregnancy.

Medications during pregnancy

  • Medications including Mexiletine and Acetazolamide often need to be discontinued during conception and pregnancy. We recommend discussion about this and pregnancy when you are family planning.

  • Research into medications for channelopathies that can be taken safely in pregnancy is ongoing but we know some medications are safer than others and can advise further if you require treatment whilst pregnant.

Delivery

  • We would recommend delivering in a hospital setting where you and the baby can be fully monitored during delivery.

  • The majority of patients have a natural delivery without complications.

  • We can help advise you and your obstetrician about what to expect in labour and delivery and help make recommendations for your delivery plan.
